Volunteer Spotlight: Emily Haigh
July is the perfect month to spotlight our summer 2018 Community Engagement Intern, Emily Haigh. Emily hails from the foothills of the Rocky Mountains out in the remote Western regions of the US, otherwise known as Colorado. She is an undergraduate at the University of Colorado in Boulder, studying political science. Emily brings a high level of enthusiasm and a great attention to detail to all of her work (see: donation intake data entry and volunteer scheduling). Within one month of joining Calvary, she has already been involved in a myriad of activities like teaching a cooking class, working the front desk, putting together volunteer appreciation gifts, database management, and accompanying the women on field trips. We’re glad to have her for the summer semester, and we wish she could stay longer!
How did you first hear about Calvary? I heard about Calvary when I was looking for internships for the summer. I was able to find Calvary through my school program back in Colorado.
Share a fun fact about yourself. I love playing tennis!
Why do you volunteer at Calvary? I volunteer at Calvary because I believe that women should support other women. Calvary has a wide variety of programs that help women in more than one way, which is important to me.
What do you like best about your work with Calvary? My favorite part about working with Calvary is the variety of tasks that I can do. It is never a boring job!
What has been your most memorable experience at Calvary? Going to Mount Vernon and being able to get to know some of the women living at Calvary. It was also a beautiful moment when the women chimed into the Underground Railroad songs that were being sung by skit performers.
What has surprised you most about volunteering at Calvary? What a tight knit community there is here. I have worked with multiple non-profits prior to Calvary and this is the first that felt like a supportive family among the staff and clients.
What would you tell someone considering getting involved at Calvary? Do it! It is an amazing experience and such a welcoming environment.
If you had to choose one word to describe Calvary, what would it be? Supportive.
