Women Make their Voices Heard at “In Her Words” Breakfast

two women talkingCalvary Women’s Services hosted the “In Her Words” Breakfast on Tuesday, October 27, and invited a full room of supporters from all walks of life to join in a new fundraising campaign called Women Empowering Women.

Women Empowering Women is more than a giving circle to support women at Calvary. It is a chance for supporters to share their strengths and resources, and invest in women. It is built on the belief that together, we can increase our reach and our impact. Women Empowering Women will create volunteer opportunities, new networking events and stronger programs that will empower more women to do and be their best.

Dee Martin, president of Calvary’s board of directors, invited everyone to find meaningful ways within the campaign to get involved. Allison Komara – a board member and long-time volunteer who has done everything from staying overnight to serving meals – reflected on how she gets so much more than she gives as a donor and volunteer.

Beverly lives at Calvary and generously shared her story at the event. She spoke about how she first became homeless and struggled for years with addiction. When Beverly became sober, she said that she “felt free like never before.”

“When I came to Calvary I found community for the first time, and by talking with the other women, I realized that I wasn’t alone,” she said. “I have met women whose stories are similar to mine, and knowing them makes me feel like I’m at home. I am so grateful to have a community of women that support me.”

Poems and quotes by women at Calvary were displayed around the room, highlighting different experiences, inspiring figures and thoughts on being a woman. One of those poems is below:

I’m Proud of Being a Woman
By Jammie

I’m proud of being a woman
their strength
their courage
their stamina
they are thinkers
believers
they don’t mind showing you how they feel
everything about them is so real.
