Volunteer Spotlight: Widows Mite Ministry

April 2015 widows mite volunteer spotlightBeing a meal volunteer at Calvary means more than providing food. Volunteers often enjoy fellowship with women at Calvary, just as we all might enjoy sitting down to a meal with our friends and family.

Every fourth Saturday of the month, a group of women from Widows Mite Ministry serves dinner at Calvary. Widows Mite Ministry is made up of individuals from congregations in the Washington Metro region. Dottie Elliott is an active member of the group, and she shared some of the joys of being a regular meal volunteer for this month’s Volunteer Spotlight. We thank Widows Mite Ministry for providing food and healing to women at Calvary each month.

How did the group first hear about Calvary?
Dottie: I was involved with another group that was no longer able to continue serving meals. I began asking friends and family how I could continue providing food for women in our community, and “Widows Mite Ministry” began.

Why do yo choose to volunteer at Calvary?
We volunteer because we can relate to the unfortunate circumstances that some of the women face, and try to ease the burdens by serving hot, home-cooked meals. Some of us have family members that have been in the same situations as women at Calvary.

What do you like best about your work with Calvary?
We love talking and sharing meals with the women. To see their faces when they are served and to hear their stories is really a healing process that goes both ways.

What has been your most memorable experience at Calvary?
We served dinner the Saturday after Thanksgiving, and many women were there. What a great meal and fellowship we shared!

What has surprised you most about volunteering at Calvary?
We are grateful that women are healing and many have moved on to their own apartments with the assistance provided by Calvary.

What would you tell someone considering getting involved at Calvary?
We would encourage participation. We think Calvary does a great job assisting women.

If you had to choose one word to describe Calvary, what would it be?
Capable.
