Women Pursue Job Opportunities at Step Up DC Career Fair

Yesterday more than 30 women attended the first Step Up DC Career Fair at Calvary Women’s Services, where they met with employers and explored job openings at several well-known businesses. The Step Up DC Career Fair was open to women currently or formerly in Calvary’s transitional and permanent housing programs as well as Calvary’s STRIDE (Search Together to Resume Dignified Employment) program.

The event began with a presentation by Teresa Rainey from the District of Columbia Office of Human Rights (OHR). Ms. Rainey discussed measures that are in place to protect the rights of DC residents who are seeking employment and housing. OHR works to eradicate discrimination and further equal opportunity for all individuals that reside in DC.

Following the presentation, women spoke with employers and learned about available job opportunities. Hiring representatives from Aaron’s Furniture, CVS Pharmacy, Five Guys, Giant Food, Marriott Marquis Washington, DC, Robert Half and Walmart were present.

“Many women at Calvary are more than ready and able to work. It was exciting to host a career fair right here at Calvary and give women the opportunity to have face-to-face time with employers,” said Kris Thompson, Calvary’s executive director. “We are grateful to the businesses that participated and hope to host more events like this in the future.”

Women enrolled in Step Up DC are committed to re-entering the workplace, pursuing their long-term career goals and securing stable sources of income so that they can live independently. Through the program, women build their confidence and skills through activities such as resume-building and mock interviewing. Step Up DC participants have secured jobs in industries including IT support, security, retail and healthcare.
