Empowering Survivors of Domestic Violence

Calvary Women’s Services has worked to empower women experiencing homelessness and domestic violence since 1984. During our 40-year history, we’ve seen countless changes to the state of homelessness in Washington, D.C., but we know that our work is more important than ever.

Since 2020, we’ve seen more and more women seeking safe homes as a result of domestic violence. In fact, new reports show that 1 in 2 single women who are experiencing homelessness in D.C. say that domestic violence caused them to lose their housing.

These women deserve access to safe, stable homes. They each have their own unique experiences. They all have inherent dignity and strength.

Despite the increase in women experiencing homelessness as a result of domestic violence, only 4% of beds in D.C. are specifically dedicated to women.

Calvary works to fill this gap by offering uniquely designed, trauma-informed housing, health, education, and employment programs. In a typical year, we can serve up to 250 women. Our ultimate goal is simple: Empower women to end their homelessness for good.

Mary* is one such woman who recently came to Calvary after fleeing an abusive relationship. Here is a little bit of her story:

Mary moved into Calvary’s transitional housing after experiencing physical and emotional abuse by her husband. He was so controlling that she was unable to keep the money she earned or see anyone without him. Mary was depressed and afraid when she first came to Calvary. She wasn’t sure how to start over after all that she had been through.

After living in a safe place and having a good Case Manager and Therapist to offer support, Mary began making noticeable strides in her recovery from trauma. She now describes herself as “happy Mary.” She smiles, talks excitedly about her new job, and will be moving to her own apartment soon.

We rely on the generosity of our community to support women like Mary during one of the most pivotal moments of their lives. Will you make a gift today to empower women and break the cycle of violence? Click here to give: calvaryservices.org/donations

*Mary’s name has been changed to protect her safety and privacy.
