Calvary Captain Countdown – 1 more day!

The 2010 Help the Homeless Walkathon is tomorrow morning! I hope you’ll be joining us!

For our final day of the Calvary Captain Countdown, we’d like to bring you one last story from a member of our volunteer team, Abie Siegel, in her own words:

Abie volunteering in the water lilies at Kenilworth Park and Aquatic Gardens boots-deep in weeds needing to be cleared

I am not a stranger to volunteerism and try to do it as much as I can. When I do, I love to get dirty. If you’re gonna take the time to help, you might as well go all out. Hunger action is also near and dear to me. I head a gleaning initiative in DC during the summer/fall and enjoy cooking home-cooked meals for others. I was recruited to walk in the Help the Homeless Walkathon by volunteer extraordinaire, Catherine Bisson. She has been working for Calvary for a little less than a year and during that short amount time has done so much for the organization – and brought her friends along!

One of the first volunteer opportunities I was fortunate to participate in was the Hope Awards. This is my favorite memory. I helped with the silent auction and saw the generosity and support by local vendors and organizations. I also enjoyed listening to speeches made by Calvary leadership and residents. Like so many volunteer initiatives, participating includes coming together to raise awareness for one specific cause.

You might not know everyone you’re walking with or see those you are walking for but in this situation that really doesn’t matter. I am most looking forward just that – coming together for a common cause and knowing that everyone on the Mall on November 20th will have the homeless in their hearts and on their minds.

See you there!
